Role Summary

The alternative-protein sector has evolved and matured but still has some way to go. As an international food awareness organisation, we have major opportunities and respond to and address certain challenges. We use an evidence-based approach to inform, inspire, and influence a changing food system. We are clear about ProVeg’s role within the ecosystem of plant-based and related NGOs, companies, food-service providers, startups, investors, policy advocates, the public, and many others. We connect stakeholders, advance innovation, increase the availability of plant-based options, and work on price, levelling the playing field, and growing the plant-based, fermented and cellular-agriculture sectors. 

This exciting opportunity calls for a level-headed communications professional who is both creative and bold, and relishes the chance to positively ruffle some (vegan) feathers. Working with the team and colleagues internationally, we are a force to reckon with. ProVeg is the go-to organisation for the plant-based, fermented and cultured-foods sector, building on our global reputation and credibility with a wide range of stakeholders.

Reporting to the Vice-President, our Global Head of Communications manages and directs ProVeg International’s external communications, alongside the Digital Director and their team. They will develop a strategic and effective communications plan for ProVeg, and directly manage communications activities that promote, enhance, and protect the organisation’s charitable mission and vision.

Direct reports: Head of Campaigns, ProVeg Spain Communications Manager
Will work closely with: Digital Director (web, brand and graphic design, and online fundraising), Director of Corporate Engagement, Philanthropy Director, Head of Research, Head of UN Advocacy, EVU Policy Managers, Country Directors, Country Communications Managers and other internal and external colleagues including the President and International Director.
Location: Remote (ideally in the UK, NL, DE, PL, CZ, or ES)
Hours: 40 hour a week
Salary: dependent on experience and location, e.g. £36k- £40k in the UK


Strategic planning and delivery

  • Be accountable for the development, delivery, and evaluation of the organisation’s communications and campaigns plans.

  • Provide leadership and set the strategic direction for media relations and PR. Ensure internal and external stakeholder engagement, and provide communication support to the Senior Leadership and Executive Team.

  • Develop and oversee an effective international communication strategy and influencing approach.

Reputation management

  • Increase ProVeg International’s visibility and profile, enhance the credibility of the organisation, and inspire supporters and other stakeholders through the use of engaging external communications.

  • Communicate the organisation’s successes in an engaging and inspiring way to multiple stakeholders, using various channels.

  • Together with the Digital Director, be the guardian of the organisation’s reputation, overseeing and managing the development of crisis communications plans, and advising on pertinent and emerging issues. 

  • Hold responsibility for the horizon scanning of internal and external issues that might cause reputational risk for the charity, while developing bespoke plans for key activities.

  • Ensure mitigations are in place to prevent issues, ensure issues are managed effectively, and be a spokesperson when necessary.

  • Report to and exchange ideas with the Executive Team regarding strategic communication alignment and/or adjustment, and coordinate and ensure synergies regarding quality control, key messages, templates, strategies, etc. 

Management and leadership

  • Oversee and ensure the management of positive relationships with the media and regional, national, and international agents of change, including influencers.

  • Be a role model for excellence in (remote) team management by motivating, coaching, giving, and receiving feedback, supporting and developing teams and skills (leading team meetings and stand-ups, conducting evaluation meetings), and driving innovation and creativity.

  • Identify areas for driving change and process improvement within Communications in order to ensure effective management, best practices, and accountability across the team.

Internal relationship management and partnerships

  • Advise and collaborate with senior colleagues across the organisation, ensuring that we are maximising opportunities to raise awareness, influence, and deepen engagement with our audiences in order to support a variety of objectives.

  • Identify synergies and potential within the organisation to inform and improve communications and further enhance the organisation’s reputation.

  • Maintain close working relationships with the Senior Leadership Team and Country Directors, constructively overcoming any operational barriers or risks to delivery, while supporting their ability to deliver strategies and plans.

  • Work with the Executive Team, the Monitoring, Evaluation and Impact Team, the Campaigns Team, and the UN Public Affairs team in order to plan and deliver public-facing and policy-influencing campaigns.

Budget and resource management and evaluation

  • Manage a dedicated budget for effective reporting and forecasting.

  • Produce timeously and regular management information for the Executive Team and other stakeholders that effectively explains performance set against KPIs and the broader strategic plan. 



  • A successful track record in professional communications, marketing, or campaigning, having developed and realised strategic aims across a range of communications channels.

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, C2 level English language skills.

  • Outstanding networking skills and experience in building productive relationships with key media stakeholders and influencers.

  • Excellent organisational and project-management skills.

  • The ability to juggle a varied workload and to work hands-on as a team player.

  • Strong team-management skills and a commitment to motivating and empowering your team remotely in order to achieve their objectives.

  • High levels of emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills – externally and internally; ability to balance the diverse interests of various departments and countries (especially if they conflict with or impact the Communications Team’s goals and objectives).

  • An appreciation and appetite for quantitative and qualitative evidence.

  • Experience with strategy development and goal-setting (KPIs or OKRs).

  • A commitment to the values and guiding principles of ProVeg.

  • A strong understanding of the use of communications and media skills in delivering public benefits.

  • An instinctive ability to work as a positive member of a wider team.

  • A dynamic and inspiring leadership style.

  • A good understanding of data-protection matters, including GDPR

  • A good understanding of the plant-based and alternative-protein sector and knowledge of food-systems change.

  • Experience with a range of visual communication methods (video, TV, infographics, etc.)

  • Strong understanding of the third sector.

  • International experience.

  • Understanding and/or experience of political processes and advocacy.

  • Membership of a relevant professional body.
